A Force Field Analysis identifies forces/factors that support or work against an idea or change objective.

Restraining (or Hindering) forces are listed on right side of the page and Driving (or Supporting) forces are listed on the left.

Arrows of different length (toward the center) maybe added to represent the relative weight of each variable (High, Medium, Low).

The concept is to identify forces that are currently in existence and then develop a strategy for each; a strategy that reinforces or increases the magnitude of driving forces and eliminates or reduces the restraining forces.

A Force Field Analysis can also be useful is team members are feeling overwhelmed by a project or verbalize general statements like, it will never work; we will not get buy-in for this idea, etc.

By taking generalized concerns and breaking them down into smaller / specific pieces, often what seemed at first to be impossible now becomes manageable.
